The pattern is consistent enough to set a watch by: an app gets abandoned around week three, a plain notebook takes over for a few weeks with real relief, and then the notebook itself picks up the exact features that sank the app โ€” sections, colour coding, a key, a system for the system.

The tool changed. The thing that made it collapse didn't. It was never the software's complexity; it was the assumption that this week's motivation would still be available to maintain it in week six.

Recognising the pattern is more useful than escaping it. If a plain notebook is about to grow a filing system, that's worth noticing before it happens rather than after the next abandonment.
